Sinking feeling for Will Brown with latest stumble
2024 Supercars champion slumped to 19th in Sunday qualifying
Brown has raced from 19th to seventh, 12th to sixth
Will Brown couldn't hide his frustration after a third consecutive qualifying slump in Townsville, labelling his latest lowly position as "shit."
The 2024 Supercars champion entered Townsville Sunday on the back of torrid qualifying runs to 19th and 12th, the latter coming after a gamble to watch the final runs from the garage.
Brown has charged through in the races, powering to seventh and fifth to gain a whopping 18 positions through two races alone. On Saturday afternoon, he grinned as he claimed he could have fought for a podium had he not fought with Ryan Wood.
On Sunday, Brown was only 19th, and his trademark optimism was replaced by clear disappointment when he fronted up on the broadcast.
"Qualified terrible again. We've had no pace in the qualifying all weekend," the 2023 Townsville winner said.
"We'll fight back this arvo, but it's disappointing. Just not getting what we want out of it and that's tough. We'll try, we'll keep pushing on. But, yeah, shit qualifying position really."
He wasn't the only Finals contender to strike trouble in Boost Mobile Qualifying — James Golding, who is on the bubble, was only 20th, with Saturday runner-up Anton De Pasquale 13th.
Brown's impressive race performances have pushed him well clear of Finals danger. Heading into Sunday's race, the Queenslander is 247 points clear of 11th place.
However, that means little in the grand scheme of chasing his first win of the season, and just his third podium of a challenging campaign.
"No grip, and it's just slow," Brown continued.
"I'll get out and race and we'l make something of it and pull our way back through.
"But ultimately again, when we're aiming to get at the back of the 10 in this race when you're starting 19th, so you don't really give yourself a shot."
Brown will launch alongside Brad Jones Racing driver Cameron Hill at 3:05pm AEST.
