Whincup set a 1:08.230s in the closing stages to set the ultimate pace.

The seven-time champion led home Garth Tander, who steered Shane van Gisbergen's car.

Fabian Coulthard ran third aboard Chaz Mostert's Walkinshaw Andretti United Commodore.

Tony D'Alberto and James Moffat rounded out the top five, with Alex Davison sixth ahead of Zak Best.

Dale Wood, Jack Perkins and Jordan Boys rounded out the top 10.

Tander set the early running on a 1:08.548s aboard van Gisbergen's #97 Holden.

The 2007 champion was trailed by Whincup and Moffat, with Best and D'Alberto just behind.

The balance of the co-driver field kept their noses clean during the 30-minute session.

The only major incident was Wood's lock-up at Turn 1 with four minutes remaining.

Wood, aboard Andre Heimgartner's car, bowled a massive wide and skated into the sand trap.

He returned to the track safely and ended up eighth.

Warren Luff also suffered a scare when a tyre let go at the back straight.

Luff, a six-time Bathurst podium-finisher, managed to coax his WAU Commodore back to the lane.

He ended up 22nd, who positions behind Craig Lowndes.

Lowndes, who drove Jack Smith's Brad Jones Racing car, wound up 20th of 25 runners.

It marked the first time since 2004 that Lowndes had driven a non-Triple Eight car in a competitive session.

Drivers from Whincup in first to Lowndes in 20th were covered by 0.94s.

Tyler Everingham brought up the rear aboard Scott Pye's Team 18 Commodore behind Dean Fiore.

Main game drivers will return to the track for Practice 3 on Saturday at 10:20am local time.

The Penrite Oil Sandown SuperSprint will play host to Races 24, 25 and 26 of season 2022.

Tickets for this year's Repco Bathurst 1000 are on sale now.
