Tickford announces Courtney departure

James Courtney will leave Tickford Racing at the end of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship, the team has announced.

In a statement, Tickford said Courtney has "mutually agreed to explore new opportunities”, paving the way to a move elsewhere in 2024.

That is set to be Blanchard Racing Team, which will expand to two cars next season.

The announcement comes after Courtney revealed to media on the Gold Coast that an “exciting” announcement regarding his future will be announced this week.

Tickford has yet to confirm its 2024 line-up, with the Courtney news coming just weeks after the team confirmed it will downscale to two cars next year. Tim Edwards, who has been CEO and Team Principal for the best part of two decades, will also leave the team.

Cam Waters, Thomas Randle and Declan Fraser are the other three drivers on Tickford's books this season, and have yet to confirm their 2024 plans.

"Thanks to Tickford Racing for providing the opportunity to race for the team and create some lifelong friendships,” Courtney said in a team release.

"It’s a family feel and was great to have the unwavering support of the Tickford fans and members, plus the entire crew whilst steering the number 5 Mustang."

Courtney joined Tickford midway through 2020 after leaving Team Sydney after just one round.

In nearly four seasons with the Campbellfield squad, Courtney has claimed six podiums, the most recent coming in Perth earlier this year.

Tickford CEO and Team Principal Tim Edwards paid tribute to the veteran, saying Courtney was a bright spark for the team amid a run of outs.

"We are grateful for JC stepping into the team to drive, where he showcased his determination to compete at the front whilst keeping his sense of humour in what can be a brutal and unpredictable sport,” Edwards said. 

"We wish him all the best with his future endeavours, where we’ll look to take it up to him and kick his ass on the track in 2024."

Courtney, who finished sixth in the Repco Bathurst 1000, will resume his 2023 campaign at this weekend's Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.
