If you thought Frosty was under pressure then spare a thought for Cameron Waters. His V8 Supercars Dunlop Series points buffer is less than the lead Winterbottom is bringing to Sydney and he has a demon driver in Paul Dumbrell hunting him down.
Also on the supports bill are the high flying Stadium Super Trucks, title deciders for the V8 Utes and Aussie Racing Cars and the rapid kids of Formula 4.
Dunlop V8 Supercars
The equation is simple for Waters – finish ahead of Dumbrell in the first race on Saturday and he is the champion. Get it wrong and his 149-point lead could become a one-point deficit ahead of the second and final race on Sunday. Game on.
Should “PD” win both races the young Prodrive star would only need a pair of tenths to bring home the title. So the game plan should be simple, stay out of trouble and do not get a DNF.
With all this talk of championships don’t be surprised if we get a surprise race winner. Jack Le Brocq, Chris Pither and Todd Hazelwood are all due.
Stadium Super Trucks
Stadium Super Trucks are to men what chick flicks are to women – a guilty pleasure that provides a cheesy brand of drama that we love and can’t walk away from.
Thankfully for us blokes watching the Stadium Super Trucks is nothing like watching “The Notebook.” And unfortunately for the ladies Paul Morris looks nothing like Ryan Gosling.
Where am I going with all this? Who cares, just don’t miss their three races.
East Coast Bullbars V8 Utes Series
Remember back in high school when you and your mates were in trouble and the school principal would sit you all down and scream at you, that’s exactly what happened to the entire V8 Ute field in Surfers Paradise.
The racing on the Gold Coast looked like a game of State of Origin on wheels and they were rightfully read the riot act after. Amidst the “panel punch-ons” local boy Ryal Harris extended his championship lead.
Now he looks good to become the first ever three-time V8 Utes champion, a very special feat. He has an 85-point buffer over George Miedecke and you only get 70 points for a race win.
However, if he finds concrete early in the weekend there are still seven drivers in contention for the championship, yikes.
CAMS Jayco Formula 4
Remember the name Jordan Lloyd, he’s a star of the future. With the final round still to play out, Lloyd has already wrapped up the title and he has $150,000 to take to Europe as his prize.
He has been sublime in his Team BRM Mygale winning 12 out of the 18 races so far. With no championship to worry about this weekend he can look to extend that tally to a number that will be very hard to beat in future years.
Let’s hope that his move to Europe next year is a successful one and he flies the Aussie flag for us in years to come. Check out their three races this weekend, as it could be your last chance to see Lloyd’s silky skills for a while.
Aussie Racing Cars
These guys were the pick of the categories at Phillip Island putting on a Moto3-like display. At one point there was about 13 of them fighting for a race win, it was seriously entertaining stuff.
The championship that started at Highlands Motorsport Park in New Zealand concludes this weekend and it looks very likely that Brendon Pingel will be the man to take home the trophy.
This is the only category that has four races scheduled.
Chad’s Fast Four
Dunlop Series: Dumbrell’s Bathurst win saw him tie Steve Owen’s all-time round wins record. Could he take the record to 11 round wins this weekend?
Stadium Super Trucks: P.J. Jones, the son of American racing legend, Parnelli Jones will join the field this weekend.
V8 Utes: Kim Jane celebrates his 350th V8 Ute start during the second race at Sydney. That’s impressive considering there have only ever been 351 races.
Aussie Racing Cars: Karting jet, Kel Treseder makes his debut this weekend. He’s a good mate of Scott McLaughlin, so let’s see if he’s learnt anything off the Volvo star.
