The championship omen in Super2's Sydney return

This weekend’s Beaurepaires Sydney SuperNight will feature just the seventh ever Super2 round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The Eastern Creek venue hosted the very first development series round in 2000, with the weekend won by Dean Canto.

SMSP hosted rounds in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2017 and 2020.

The 2000 (Canto), 2003 (Mark Winterbottom), 2004 (Andrew Jones), 2005 (Canto) and 2020 (Thomas Randle) rounds were won by the driver who went on the win the overall title.

So, therein is an omen for drivers this weekend; five of six Sydney round winners have gone on to win the title.

The 2021 Dunlop Series has mostly belonged to Broc Feeney, who has won four of six races so far.

However, the Triple Eight teen is only 51 points ahead of Tickford Racing driver Zak Best, with MW Motorsport’s Jayden Ojeda a further 36 points in arrears.

With two 150-point races this weekend, the title can swing in any which direction.

That was the case when the development series last competed at SMSP in July 2020.

Title combatants Will Brown and Thomas Randle shared the wins, but their roads to victory weren’t smooth.

Brown, who scored his maiden main game win in Sydney last weekend, claimed a second career Super2 race win while title rivals Randle and Brodie Kostecki both suffered setbacks.

Race 1 was held under the lights of Sydney Motorsport Park, and Brown inherited second position when Kostecki slowed with an alternator problem early in the race.

Randle later struck trouble on a Safety Car restart, and was penalised. However, the penalty was later overturned.

Randle crossed the line second behind Brown but was classified ninth, before he was reclassified in second.

Randle’s dramas saw Brown take over the lead in the standings, but it changed hands again when Randle won Race 2.

Randle, who scored both pole positions, and scored a lights-to-flag win from MW Motorsport team-mate Ojeda in Race 2.

Kostecki and Brown were third and fourth, ensuring Randle stole the points lead.

Feeney had started second, but stalled his #5 Tickford Racing Falcon and plummeted to the rear of the 22-car field.

Ojeda tried to stay with Randle, but the eventual champion and future Tickford main game driver won by over four seconds.

Randle and Brown would later split wins at Mount Panorama, with Randle later awarded the title.

Will there be another twist in a Super2 tale when the future stars hit SMSP this weekend?
