Dick Johnson Racing Team Principal Dr Ryan Story is on the road to recovery, crediting medical staff for “saving my life” after an 18-day health battle.

Story contracted a virus during a trip to the United States in late January, and after a brief visit to DJR headquarters, was admitted to hospital on February 8.

In the 18 days since, Story has undergone treatment, and is set to return home on Wednesday to commence the next stage of his recovery.

The virus forced Story out of the Thrifty Sydney 500 - Opening Round, where new recruit Brodie Kostecki made his long-awaited debut with the Ford team.

“So, after an ambulance ride, resuscitations, intensive care, pneumonia, pleural effusion, lung abscess, sepsis, hypoxia, dehydration, PICC lines, IVs, antibiotics, transfusions, surgeries, CTs, X-rays and everything in between, I’m finally getting out of hospital today,” he wrote.

“Turns out that 18 days in here is enough for me… Enormously grateful to the best doctors, nurses and staff in Brisbane for saving my life, to my family, close friends and everyone who has been kind enough to offer me support and well wishes.

“Recovery proper starts now – further proof that sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.”

Team owner Dick Johnson and wife Jill also missed the Sydney event after contracting a virus.

Supercars Hall of Famer Johnson travelled to the States to accept the Spirit of Ford Award at Ford Performance’s season launch.

Kostecki and Will Davison are eighth and 15th, and DJR fifth, heading to the next round in Melbourne.

The 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will resume at the Melbourne SuperSprint, which will feature at the Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix 2025 on March 13-16.
