Friday top three against changes to pit entry
Motormall Wanneroo Raceway’s pit entry got an unexpected workout in Friday practice, but star Supercars drivers are against changes.
One of the unique aspects of the 2.4km circuit is the pit entry, which is located on driver’s right just as cars round the final corner.
Two entry roads were made when the pit complex on the inside of the Perth circuit was built in 2012, with an alternate route peeling off on the back straight.
The alternate entry was originally designed for motorcycles, but would require official sign-off to be adopted by Supercars.
Drivers have to slow significantly through Turn 7 to peel off into the lane, and risk being hit by cars behind. On Friday, it happened twice.
Andre Heimgartner slowed to come into pit lane, but was sent into a spin by Jack Le Brocq. Later, Cooper Murray — on a lap — drilled Rylan Gray as the latter came into pit lane.
When asked if the pit entry needs a rethink, Brodie Kostecki — who was also hit by Shane van Gisbergen during his 2023 battle — put it back on his rivals.
“No, just common sense,” Kostecki said.
Broc Feeney was equally coy, saying: "I think it's pretty good. Just got to put your blinker on when you're coming in.”
Friday fast man Matt Payne was circumspect, adding: “I don't think so. I think it's been a bit of a highlight of the track for as many years as it’s been here.
“Unfortunately, that just happens sometimes, so I don't think it needs to change.”
Supercars return to Motormall Wanneroo Raceway on Saturday for back-to-back Boost Mobile Qualifying sessions, beginning at 9:45am local time/11:45am AEST.
