Kai Allen secured brilliant first win in Christchurch this afternoon
20-year-old withstood searing pressure from Brodie Kostecki in dying laps
Allen let go from DJR development deal to chase full-time ride in 2024
Perhaps it's fitting that Kai Allen would lead home a Dick Johnson Racing Mustang to claim his first career Supercars win, with a performance that completely defied the odds.
Whilst it might've defied the odds, it didn't defy how highly-rated the South Australian is, given Penrite Racing co-owner Stephen Grove declared him a 'generational talent' when Allen was announced to be re-signing with the team through to 2030.
The 20-year-old was simply awesome in Christchurch this afternoon, making the most of a bold strategy play by Penrite Racing. It was a move that left him with a lot of work to do.
At the end of lap 16 of 37, the Penrite crew brought in their young charge in from third on the road, behind Brodie Kostecki and Ryan Wood, who pitted on lap 21 and 20 respectively.
There are several elements that go into any race win, such as Penrite delivering another brilliant strategy, a short and twisty circuit that is difficult to overtake on, but at the end of the day it's the driver who delivers the result.
Penrite made two clever plays that proved crucial. One, they executed a major undercut, using fresh rubber to build an advantage early, and two, electing to only change the rear tyres, and saving several seconds in pit lane.
It was a sugar hit early, with Allen racing away to a five second lead, however that was quickly whittled away by up to second a lap by a charging Kostecki, who let his intentions known as he bumped into Allen with five to go.
It was a statement of the highest quality from a driver of such inexperience. I am winning this race, and there's nothing you can do about it.
Perhaps there was a message to DJR, who decided to let him explore pastures new when a development deal expired midway through 2024, as they struggled with Ford homologation duties.
What DJR potentially lost, Penrite Racing gained, and in the space of little more than a year, Kai Allen has not only become a Grand Finalist, but now a race winner.
"I remember still to this day walking into the Grove Hire HQ and sitting down with Stephen and Brenton, and they had a pretty clear plan on what they wanted to do over the next few years," reflected Allen at the press conference.
"I was pretty excited from day one knowing that I could definitely have some success with this team, so it's a credit to them.
"They were really the only team that put all their eggs in the one basket and chose me to have a crack, and I'm very grateful that they did, and that I can obviously repay it as well."
"There were definitely some points where there was success last year, but I knew I had a long way to go, and I still do.
"Obviously the race was executed well by the team and everything, but I've still got to find some pace to make sure I keep getting better and better results."
And then there's the man he beat, Brodie Kostecki, who has been back to his brilliant best, with six podiums in the last seven starts, four of which were wins.
If there's anyone you don't want behind you while chasing your first win it's Brodie Kostecki. But, to Allen, it's just another car, and one he knew he had the upper hand on.
"With about five laps to go I thought, 'Oh here we go, Brodie's coming,' but obviously I've done a lot of study on this track, and it goes to show if you can put the car in the right spot, it's very hard for the car behind to pass," Allen added of his drive.
"That's why the undercut was so powerful, at a normal track I probably would've been P4, and the other guys up the road, but I knew if I fought hard, put the car in the right spots I could end up where I am and here we are.
"I'm absolutely blown away, I can't thank all the Penrite guys and girls enough, because they made my dreams come true."
In an alternate universe, we could very well be in a world where Allen and Kostecki are both driving the Shell V-Power Racing Team forward.
But alas, Dr Ryan Story has confessed that if Allen was to join the team alongside Kostecki last year, it wasn't a recipe for success, given the team was still struggling with the balancing act of being Ford's homologation team.
Instead, we live in a world where Allen is paired with an equally young and ambitious team, and thriving. If rumours surrounding Payne are true, he could very well become the team's leader in the next few years.
One thing's for sure, Kai Allen's story is only just getting started.
