The story of the day has arrived: after five races, can leader Ryan Wood win the Jason Richards Trophy?
Through 680 kilometres of racing, just 61 laps stand between Wood and an historic triumph: the first winner of a Jason Richards Trophy contested over two rounds.
The inaugural ITM NZ Double Header has been a hit, and Kiwis Wood and Matt Payne have surged to the fore.
With a maximum of 145 points up for grabs in Sunday’s ITM Christchurch Super 440 finale, only nine drivers remain in contention for the JR Trophy. However, three are in realistic contention: leader Wood, second-placed Brodie Kostecki, and third-placed Broc Feeney.
Payne, Will Brown, Kai Allen, James Golding, Chaz Mostert and Anton De Pasquale are all in mathematical contention, but need to win and hope for a Wood DNF to be in with a shot.
For New Zealanders, it’s a story of how either of Wood or Payne can win it. Seven Australians have other ideas.
On paper, it's straightforward: if they all finish Race 13 where they start, Wood wins it comfortably. However, this is Supercars, so nothing is guaranteed, nor do things usually pan out as expected.
How can Wood hang on, and join Payne, Shane van Gisbergen and Scott McLaughlin as Kiwi winners of the JR Trophy? Supercars.com breaks it down.
