Promotional Toyota Supra gets new look thanks to local competition
Supercars, ChristchurchNZ partnered to create competition for Canterbury school student
Winning design created by 15-year-old Sean McCall, showcasing Christchurch icons
The Toyota Supra being used to promote the ITM Christchurch Super 440 has new look courtesy of a student design competition held in the Canterbury region.
Amid the celebrations leading up to the second leg of the ITM Christchurch, Supercars, in conjunction with ChristchurchNZ, opened up competition to design a livery to be applied to the bonnet of the promo car.
The competition was open from March 5-30, with children aged between five and 18 in the Canterbury region encouraged to design a new-look bonnet for the Toyota Supra.
Among all entries, design inspirations came from local culture, nature, community identity, and the Repco Supercars Championship.
The winning design of 15-year-old Rolleston College student Sean McCall was publicly unveiled at the Supercars Fanfare event in Christchurch on Thursday afternoon.
The teenager also got the opportunity to meet Walkinshaw TWG Racing superstars Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood, who leads the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy standings
The winning design features several of Christchurch's most iconic landmarks, with McCall explaining the process behind his winning design.
“The design is inspired by some of Christchurch’s most iconic landmarks with Ruapuna included as a central element," said McCall.
"Flowing through the composition is the Avon River, which visually connects key features and represents the Kotahitanga, unity and togetherness of the Christchurch community.”
The Supra was also in action yesterday with Brad Jones Racing star Andre Heimgartner, who went for a spin at the Wigram Aerodrome, a former New Zealand Grand Prix venue in 1974, alongside a Formula 5000 Lola that competed in the race over 50 years ago.
McCall has also won six Supercars merchandise packs, six three-day adult passes, a team garage tour for six people, and two grid walks.
On-track action at the ITM Christchurch Super 440 begins with practice, Boost Mobile Qualifying, and Race 10 tomorrow.
