Matt Payne pulled a lap out of the fire to steal Race 27 pole from Brodie Kostecki at the death.
The Penrite Racing driver, who claimed Boost Mobile Pole for the day's first race, smashed down a surprise flyer at the end of the session to pry pole away from Kostecki.
Will Brown looked to have claimed a drought-breaking front row, but will start alongside Chaz Mostert, and ahead of Kai Allen and Broc Feeney.
