The 2026 Repco Supercars Finals Series hopes of Kai Allen and Ryan Wood have taken major hits after a dramatic Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 opener.
An alternator failure for Penrite Racing driver Allen, and a lack of pace in the wet for Wood’s #2 Mobil 1 Truck Assist Toyota, has blown the race wide open. Matt Stone Racing driver Jack Le Brocq, who started the day 10th, was turned around by Cameron Hill, and finished 22nd.
It was a much brighter day — albeit, under bleak skies — for Wood’s teammate Chaz Mostert, who qualified for the Sandown Semi Final.
Allen's teammate, championship leader Matt Payne, was the only other driver to provisionally book their Sandown ticket, holding a 189-point buffer over the sister Penrite Racing car with 150 available on Sunday.
Allen started eighth for Saturday’s 250km race, which started under the control of the Shannons Safety Car amid inclement weather.
The #26 Penrite Mustang, which was wiped out of Bathurst contention with braking issues, was ultimately delayed by a failing alternator. The issue dropped Allen down the order, before consigning him into pit lane for an unscheduled third stop, leading to an eventual finish of 24th and last.
Wood, meanwhile, entered the day outside the provisional top seven, and after incurring a kerb strike in the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, plummeted down the order.
It was in stark contrast to the performance of teammate Mostert, who blazed to victory by over 20 seconds, sealing early passage through to Sandown.
