Chaz Mostert falls just short of second Daytona 24 victory
Mostert Mercedes just 2.2s shy of class victory overnight
Mostert raced with Will Power, Kenny Habul, and Maro Engel
Supercars champion Chaz Mostert has fallen just short of a second class victory in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Racing with fellow Australians Will Power and Kenny Habul, and German Maro Engel, Mostert’s #75 Mercedes-AMG ended up 2.2s behind the winning #1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M6.
Mostert, who won in class with BMW in 2020, watched on as Engel chased Dan Harper’s BMW in the final hour after a positional change in the pits.
Engel led into the final two hours, but the #1 BMW got ahead in the final pit stop sequence, opening up a 10 second lead over the #75 Mercedes.
Engel slashed the margin, but was just two seconds down at the chequered flag, denying the Aussie themed Mercedes the win.
Overall victory went to the Porsche Penske Motorsport trio of Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer and Laurin Heinrich.
Brazilian Nasr claimed his third victory in the race, and third in a row for Porsche Penske Motorsport. The Porcshe crossed the line just 1.5s ahead of the #31 Action Express Racing Cadillac of Earl Bamber, Jack Aitken, Frederik Vesti and Connor Zilisch.
The thrilling finish came after an extended period of caution running, with fog leading to a six hour Safety Car period through the night.
Mostert will turn his attention to the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour on February 13-15, where he will share a Mercedes with Supercars rivals Cam Waters and Thomas Randle.
