Brodie Kostecki laughs off burnout blunder
Kostecki smacked the wall celebrating Townsville
DJR star returned to top three in championship
Brodie Kostecki was mistake-free in the NTI Townsville 500 — until after the chequered flag.
By race’s end, Kostecki had 9.3s over championship leader Matt Payne, who in turn finished 5.4s ahead of the fuel-saving Tickford Racing Mustang of Cam Waters.
As he cruised down to Turn 7, Kostecki kicked off his winning burnout, leaving the Reid Park Street Circuit precinct in his smoke.
The 2023 Supercars champion then tipped his #17 Mustang into a spin, celebrating victory.
What wasn't in the plan, was Kostecki sliding rearwards into the concrete wall and tagging the fence with the left rear of his Ford, in scenes reminiscent of Will Davison in 2013.
“I had some guys down from Summernats, I didn’t want to disappoint,” Kostecki laughed.
"I didn't want to disappoint, but I have to work on that a little bit. I thought you guys couldn't see it through the smoke.
"So then I need to do a better job getting there with a bit more smoke.”
It didn't wipe the smile off Kostecki's face, having returned to PIRTEK Victory Lane for the first time since Christchurch in April.
“Super stoked for everyone on the Shell V-Power Racing Team. The #17 Ford Mustang was absolutely on fire,” Kostecii beamed.
“It's had this potential the whole weekend. We just haven't executed, so pleased with that.”
The 2026 Supercars season resumes in Perth on July 31-August 2.
