Will Brown lucky to avoid Ryan Wood/James Golding collision
Brown was able to finish fifth in race won by teammate Broc Feeney
Brown lost 45 points to Feeney in fight for Repco Sprint Cup
The controversial collision between James Golding and Ryan Wood in the dying laps of Race 16 at Bosch Power Tools Perth Super 440 could've had major ramifications on the fight for the Repco Sprint Cup.
Golding was pressuring Cam Waters for fourth when he ran wide at Turn 1 with nine laps to go, allowing Wood to range up alongside through the Esses, before Golding lost control on the marbles and speared Wood.
All of this occurred right in front of reigning Repco Supercars Championship winner Will Brown, who snuck his way by as the #31 Camaro and #2 Mustang both fired off with steering damage.
It could've spelled disaster for the 27-year-old, as teammate Broc Feeney swept to his fifth win of the season, and claimed all 145 points available with the fastest lap bonus points.
Brown finished fifth after avoiding the chaos, losing 45 points to Feeney in the process, and revealed that he could see the clash unfolding well before it had happened.
"Yeah, that Golding and Wood tussle, I knew they both race hard and I knew going up there at that part of the track, generally, it just ends in tears through there," Brown said.
"One person should usually relent, but I knew neither one of them would and when they came together I picked up two positions, so I was happy with that.
"You never like to see cars crash especially sitting right behind them, but at the end of the day, everyone's racing hard out there and those things are going to happen."
Brown had a big moment himself with Golding, who made a late defensive block on the #1 Camaro at Turn 7 on lap 31 as he fought to keep track position after making his first stop.
Whilst Brown believed he could've found himself on the podium had things played out differently, he wasn't disappointed to claim a top five finish, his 12th of the season in 15 completed races.
"Got not a bad start, but, overall just didn't feel like we had it with the car today. Yesterday, we felt so strong, had really good endurance in the car and I felt like going in to today's race that we were going to be able to race for the win.
"But unfortunately, just had a bit going on out on track, put myself in a tough position with Golding and we had some hard racing there. Ultimately didn't get the result we wanted.
"It was looking good mid-race until the safety car allowed a few people to jump us in the pits. We had a strong pit stop too then that's just the way it happened out on track.
"So, yeah, ended up fifth. Thought we might be back on for a podium, but overall, solid weekend."
