Will Brown crashed out of Saturday's Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout
Brown set fastest first sector before coming unstuck at Beach Chicane
Crash came hours after fellow Finals Driver Brodie Kostecki's huge qualifying crash
The Repco Supercars Finals Series has taken yet another major turn prior to the opening race of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500, following a crash for Will Brown.
After Brodie Kostecki's major crash at the end of Boost Mobile Qualifying, which has left the #38 Shell V-Power Mustang likely out of this afternoon's 85 lap race, his former teammate Brown was the next to find trouble.
Rolling out sixth in the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout, the #1 Red Bull Ampol Racing Camaro bested teammate Broc Feeney through the opening sector, and was on to challenge around the top of the timesheets.
However, as he attacked the Beach Chicane, Brown flew off the Turn 9 kerb, and compromised his run into Turn 10. The #1 then slid wide at the exit, and side-swiped the tyres on drivers' right.
The front right corner was then swung around into the concrete, breaking the suspension as Brown slid along the concrete wall to a halt.
"Sorry guys. I'm all good, I'm all good," a dejected Brown reported over the radio.
"So sorry, I didn't think I was out of control until I hit that."
It's the second time in three years that the reigning champion has crashed in a Gold Coast Shootout, after thumping the fence at the first chicane in 2023.
When asked whether or not he felt like the #1 Camaro was on for a potential pole run today, Brown responded: "It felt that way, it felt like I got through Sector 1 and I was on it.
"I told myself going into the Beach Chicane, 'Let's not screw this up,' and that's exactly what happened," he said after returning to pit lane.
"We should just be running some Stadium Super Trucks out there, because that's basically what we're doing through the chicanes, you just straight line them and hope you come out.
"I didn't get out the other side in that one, so disappointing, but we'll work hard.
"We've got a fast race car, we'll work hard and come back this afternoon. We've got to get through to that Finals next round."
Whilst the damage is considerable, it didn't appear to be as severe as the damage to Kostecki's Mustang. Getting the car repaired will be crucial for the Queenslander, who enters the weekend third in points, 57 points above the cut-line.
Brown added: "I looked at it, but I'm no mechanic, I just saw there was a wheel hanging off it and thought, 'Oh shit that doesn't look good.'
"We'll get it back out, we've got a great crew at Red Bull Ampol Racing. We're fast, the fans have turned it on, it's been mega so far.
"This is an awesome Finals system, we've got to get back out there and get into it."
WAU young gun Ryan Wood claimed pole for this afternoon's race, with Feeney alongside on the front row. Brown will start 10th.
Race 28 of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will begin at 3:15pm local time/4:15pm AEDT.
