Safety Car rule changes locked in for Bathurst 1000
Proposed changes received unanimous support at Commission
Track action commences in Bathurst on Thursday October 9
The Supercars Commission has signed off on Safety Car rule changes ahead of the upcoming Bathurst 1000.
Revealed Wednesday, a proposal was to be taken to the Commission regarding a return to 2023-style Safety Car rules, effective from the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 9-12.
The changes received unanimous support at Thursday morning's Commission meeting, with a decision reached after just 18 minutes.
The 80km/h speed limiter will be removed, except for in emergency situations, from the upcoming Repco Bathurst 1000, as will the 'slow zones' and closing of pit lane, which were trialled at the AirTouch 500 at The Bend.
Under the revised rules, drivers must slow significantly when passing an incident area, and will be signalled by double-waved yellow flags.
While the limiters have been removed, drivers will still be monitored over compliance to Safety Car and yellow flag conditions, or risk receiving penalties.
Explained by Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton on Wednesday, the proposed changed maintained that "the first priority in any Safety Car situation is always the safety of everyone involved," and that they strike the right balance between "maintaining rigorous safety protocols and delivering the thrilling racing our fans expect."
The rule changes will be announced upon the release of further supplementary regulations for the event.
Track action at the Repco Bathurst 1000 commences on Thursday October 9. Tickets are on sale now.
