Ryan Wood leads an all-WAU lockout in a Shootout of surprises
Wood beats Chaz Mostert, Broc Feeney seventh in crucial Sandown Shootout
Mostert trails Feeney by 30 points, win would qualify either driver for Adelaide
Ryan Wood has denied teammate Chaz Mostert pole position in a crucial Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, with points leader Broc Feeney seventh.
With nothing to lose, having been eliminated at Surfers Paradise, Wood laid down a brilliant 1:08.7371s to claim his third pole of the 2025 season.
Gold Coast winner Mostert, though, continued his march towards the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship with another vital showing, with closest rivals Feeney and Matt Payne behind him.
"First of all I just can't thank everyone at WAU enough, to tune up the rocket like they have done is pretty impressive," said Wood after claiming his third Boost Mobile Pole Award of 2025.
"We've got a pretty good baseline off of Chazzie, and we've just chipped away and the Mobil 1 Truck Assist Mustang is a rocket at the moment, so I really want to covert it this afternoon into a good result.
"But first things first is to help Chazzie out, so eyes on."
Anton De Pasquale and Brodie Kostecki will share the second row for Race 30, which commences at 3:20pm local time, ahead of Kai Allen, Payne, Feeney, Bryce Fullwood, Cam Waters and David Reynolds.
Waters kicked off the Shootout with a 1:09.5352s, with Reynolds falling 0.028s short. Payne went next, and blazed to the top to the tune of 0.43s with a 1:09.1050s.
Fullwood lost time through the final sector and clocked a 1:09.4948s, and dropped in 0.389s behind Payne. De Pasquale then went with Payne through Sector 1, and improved through the mid-sector to jump ahead by 0.091s.
Kostecki stayed with De Pasquale and Payne through the first two sectors, before the #38 Shell V-Power Ford hooked up in Sector 3 to fall just 0.007s short.
Armed with green rear tyres, Allen lit up the time sheets through Sector 1, and despite missing out on top spot by 0.087s, out-qualified teammate Payne.
Mostert, Feeney and Wood stood between De Pasquale and a shock pole. The double Gold Coast winner launched into his lap with a brilliant first sector, and was marginally down on De Pasquale's mid-sector. Mostert closed out the first 1:08s lap of the Shootout, a 1:08.9000s, to put the pressure right back on Feeney.
Feeney set off after Mostert's time with a green right rear tyre, and was less than 0.1s down on his Ford rival's first sector. However, the lap fell away, Feeney only sixth before Wood completed the Shootout.
Chasing redemption after more heartbreak on the Gold Coast, Wood powered to the top with a 1:08.7371s, foing 0.1629s faster than Mostert.
The 81-lap Race 30 will commence at 3:20pm.
