Disaster for Will Brown, Thomas Randle as Ryan Wood paces qualifying
Brown 15th, Randle 22nd in Boost Mobile Qualifying at Sandown
Randle failed to reach Q2, Brown got out of car before times improved
Will Brown and Thomas Randle have thrown their Finals campaigns into disarray in a Boost Mobile Qualifying session of shocks at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500.
Ryan Wood led Broc Feeney and Chaz Mostert through two frantic sessions of qualifying, while reigning champion Brown and Randle both failed to progress to the Top Ten Shootout.
Kai Allen, Brodie Kostecki, Anton De Pasquale, Bryce Fullwood, Matt Payne, David Reynolds and Cam Waters also sailed into the one-lap dash, with Jaxon Evans 11th.
For some of the field, Q1 represented the first meaningful running on the Dunlop Super Soft tyre all weekend, with the likes of Friday pacesetters Team 18, Triple Eight, and Tickford running the softer rubber for the first time all weekend.
Fullwood went the first into the 1:08s on a 1:08.8747s for Brad Jones Racing, quickly joined by Kostecki on a 1:08.8687s.
Tickford and Walkinshaw Andretti United elected to go for only one run in Q1, with Finals Drivers Mostert, Waters, and Randle all under pressure to execute.
Mostert was best placed after the opening lap, going to 10th, however Waters and Wood also played themselves into the game as their tyres came up to temperature and pressure.
The most glaring omission was Randle, who struggled in his opening two laps, and was forced into an all or nothing final lap. As the chequered flag came out, Brown improved to third, but Randle looked to have done enough.
However, he was 0.14s away from Q2, and was buried in 22nd. Andre Heimgartner, Jack Le Brocq, Aaron Cameron and Macauley Jones were also eliminated.
Brown kicked off Q2 with a 1:09.2413s, with Fullwood continuing his impressive pace with a 1:09.3079s. Payne, Kostecki, Feeney and Wood filing in behind, with WAU again going bold with Mostert, who remained in the lane.
After Brown improved to a 1:09.1320s and stepped out of his car, drivers set off for their second runs. At that time, Percat jumped to second with a 1:09.2823s, with Allen, Waters and Mostert in the drop zone.
Kostecki powered to the top with a 1:08.8256s, with Waters second with a 1:08.9660s. Mostert dug himself out of a hole and moved to third, but as the times improved, Brown tumbled down the order.
After being quickest when he got out of the car, Brown was 15th, 0.57s off the pace. He will start behind Will Davison, who will launch from 14th for his 600th Supercars race.
The Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout will commence at 12:40pm local time, which completes the grid for Race 30, which starts at 3:20pm.
