Queensland Supercars teams monitoring Cyclone Alfred
Cyclone headed for south-east Queensland, northern NSW coast
Teams set to leave for Melbourne on Sunday ahead of March 13-16 event
Northern Supercars teams are monitoring a cyclone headed for south-east Queensland, amid preparations for the upcoming Melbourne SuperSprint.
The south-east Queensland region is bracing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred as it tracks towards the south-east Queensland and northern NSW coast.
A warning zone spanning north of the Sunshine Coast down to Yamba has been issued, with the category two system forecast set to make landfall late Thursday or early Friday morning.
Cyclone Alfred has already wreaked havoc in the sporting world, with two AFL Opening Round matches scheduled for Queensland this weekend been postponed.
The NRL also confirmed Friday night's game between the Dolphins and South Sydney Rabbitohs would be relocated from Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium to Parramatta's CommBank Stadium.
This weekend's WPGA Championship event on the Gold Coast has also been cancelled.
Brisbane-based Jamie Whincup has also withdrawn from this weekend's Race Of Champions in Sydney, with Brodie Kostecki called up to replace the Supercars Hall of Famer.
The weather isn't expected to delay the four teams' preparations for Melbourne, with team transporters set to leave for the Victorian capital on Sunday night.
Triple Eight Race Engineering is based in Banyo in Brisbane's north, while Dick Johnson Racing (Stapylton), Matt Stone Racing (Yatala) and PremiAir Racing (Arundel) are all based on the Gold Coast.
“We are watching and monitoring Cyclone Alfred closely," an MSR spokesperson said.
“The timing is not ideal as we get stuck into final preparations for the Australian Grand Prix.
“Currently, we’re not too concerned that the cyclone will impact us significantly from a race team perspective, but we are bringing car prep forward to be ready for anything.
“Of the utmost importance is the health and safety of our staff.
“Some people may not be able to make it into work later in the week due to the weather or flash flooding, but as a team we will rally together to ensure the cars are prepared to the highest standard, as always.”
A DJR spokesperson said: "We're monitoring the situation and preparations for out trip to Melbourne remain on schedule.
"We will keep a close eye on the weather in the coming days and make any necessary adjustments to our schedule should there be any impacts on the team."
At current, winds greater than 130km/h are forecast for Brisbane and the Gold Coast on Thursday and Friday, with over 100mm of rain possible on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Track action at the Melbourne SuperSprint will commence on Thursday March 13.
