Historic Chaz Mostert, Matt Payne Ford Supercars retired
Mostert claimed drivers' title in WAU's third and final Ford season
Payne/Garth Tander won 2025 Repco Bathurst 1000
The two now-famous Fords that took home the biggest Supercars prizes in 2025 have been parked.
Mustangs won the Repco Supercars Championship and Repco Bathurst 1000 in a sparkling year for the Blue Oval.
While General Motors clinched the Champion Manufacturer title for a fifth season running, albeit by 17 wins to 16, Ford celebrated the year’s biggest triumphs.
Matt Payne/Garth Tander took out October’s Repco Bathurst 1000, marking Penrite Racing’s first Great Race victory.
Just last weekend, Chaz Mostert led Toyota-bound Walkinshaw Andretti United to drivers’ championship glory in a thrilling bp Adelaide Grand Final.
Both Mustangs have now driven their final race, with Penrite Racing and WAU benching both chassis.
Mostert’s chassis, WR28, had been in the hands of the Queenslander since Newcastle 2023, when the Gen3 era began. He claimed the team’s first Ford win in Perth last year, but after being moved into a new chassis for the start of 2025, Mostert was shifted back into WR28 from Townsville.
At the time of the switch, WAU said WR29 would be rotated into a spare car for the remainder of the year, before being a spare as a team shifted to Toyota from 2026.
WR28 was put up for auction after the 2024 Penrite Oil Sandown 500, with the successful bidder to take delivery of the car by the end of 2025. It ends its time in Supercars with six wins, three of which came in this year’s Repco Supercars Finals Series, alongside 25 podiums in 67 starts.
Penrite Racing also opted to retire Payne’s chassis, GR-01, after its historic Bathurst victory in October.
The chassis was raced by David Reynolds in 2023, with Payne moved into the car for 2025. All told, Payne won five races this season: two in Taupō, one in Tasmania, Bathurst, and the Adelaide finale.
The Grove squad is expected to build at least one new car for the 2026 season.
“We’ve had a great year. Winning Bathurst, both Matty Payne and Kai Allen winning races, and having Kai in contention through to the Grand Final,” Stephen Grove said.
“Most importantly, we can park the Bathurst car now. It will never race again. It’s the biggest trophy from this year."
