Chaz Mostert wants another crack at Race Of Champions
Supercars star became first Aussie to reach individual ROC final
Will Brown/Brodie Kostecki finished second in team event
Chaz Mostert is keen for another crack at the Race Of Champions after setting the 2025 Sydney event alight, just days after receiving a late call-up.
The two-time Bathurst winner was named as a replacement for Mattias Ekstrom just five days ago, with the Swede withdrawing due to ill health.
Mostert was the fourth Supercars driver to get the call, after 2024 champion Will Brown and Jamie Whincup were paired in Team Australia Supercars, before Brodie Kostecki replaced Whincup.
The Supercars trio put on the best performance by Australians at a Race Of Champions, Brown/Kostecki finishing second in the Nations Cup, and Mostert second in the individual competition.
Whincup became the first Supercars driver to compete in 2012, and returned in 2014. Whincup didn’t make it out of the group stage in 2012, while he reached the semi-finals in 2014, going down to eventual winner David Coulthard.
In signs of the drivers showing off Aussie pride, Brown and Kostecki revved up the Sydney crowd as Mostert attempted to dethrone Loeb, before the trio celebrated with a shoey.
Having wowed local crowds and garnered international attention, Mostert said he was keen for another start in the event.
“I have to thank Fredrik and Jessie [Johnsson] and the ROC team for the invitation and for putting on such a great event, hopefully I get invited back," Mostert said.
“I am not so sure how I would go on the snow in Sweden, I think I would probably be like a penguin on Bondi Beach.
“Although I must say that I was really enjoying the jump over the bridge in the Rallycross car by the end of tonight.
“It was great to share the weekend with Will and Brodie and also with Molly [Taylor] and Toby [Price], all flying the Australian flag.”
Mostert was blown away to become the first Australian in the event’s 37-year history to make the Champion of Champions final.
The Walkinshaw Andretti United driver went down to rally legend Sebastien Loeb, who won a record-breaking fifth title to go with his Nations Cup win for France.
“Just to make the final as the first Australian was a real honour,” Mostert said.
“It was always going to be a big ask to beat an amazing nine-time World Rally Champion in the final, especially in a couple of rally/off-road vehicles, but we gave it a crack.
“To be honest, I felt more pressure yesterday, because I did not want to mess up the Nations Cup for my All Stars teammate Johan [Kristoffersson] after being a late call up.
“Today, if I was going to mess up, it was only myself who I was going to let down.
“Going in and out of different cars was really difficult at first, but by the end of the weekend you sort of got used to it and the car you were probably scared of the most at the start was one of my favourites by tonight."
Brown, Mostert and Kostecki will resume their Supercars campaigns in Melbourne next weekend.
