Broc Feeney tips Hidden Valley qualifying games
25 cars covered by 0.6s in final Darwin practice on Friday
Saturday qualifying starts at 8:35am local time
Championship leader Broc Feeney says tows in qualifying are “part of the game” in Darwin, as Supercars drivers ready for a huge Saturday.
After a clean Friday at Hidden Valley Raceway, drivers will be put to the task in two Boost Mobile Qualifying sessions and two 120km sprint races.
Ryan Wood and Andre Heimgartner topped Friday’s two sessions, yet traffic played a role late in both sessions as drivers aimed for clean laps.
Feeney believes he "rolled out pretty competitive time-wise” after leading the balance of Practice 1, before missing out on a clean green run in Practice 2.
Hidden Valley Raceway is just 2.8km long, and despite featuring 14 turns, it boasts one of the longest main straights in Australia at 1.1km in length.
By virtue of leading the teams’ championship, Triple Eight is parked closest to pit exit, and Feeney will lead the field out. It means Feeney and Will Brown will be at risk of towing their rivals down the straight.
While Feeney believes he should have enough speed, he thinks the tow could come into effect.
"Hard to pinpoint one thing to think about for tomorrow,” said Feeney, who took Aussie actor Travis Fimmel for a hot lap after practice.
"The tow is definitely a part of the game here and being first out in the garage probably doesn't help, but it depends how competitive you are.
"It hasn't hurt us the last few rounds, if you're fast enough you can do it by yourself but if you're not, yeah, you're probably looking for a tow to help you along.
"We'll just wait and see how we're going, try and get in the top 10 and then from there we'll look to see what we can do.”
Wood managed to get a tow off the back of Brown’s car, but the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver played down suggestions teammates could help each other.
“It’s too difficult to do that [tow] stuff with teammates,” Wood said.
“It gets messy if you trip over each other. I definitely went out there looking for a tow, and lucky enough, Browny gave me one."
Supercars action resumes on Saturday with dual Boost Mobile Qualifying from 8:35am local time/9:05am AEST. Race 17 will commence at 11:45am local/12:15pm AEST, followed by Race 18 at 3:10pm local/3:40pm AEST.
