Sinking feeling for teary Broc Feeney as championship slips away
Engine issue cruelly denies Feeney a chance to fight back after early incident
Ryan Wood tipped Feeney into a spin on the opening lap
An emotional Broc Feeney admits his costly engine issue was always set to catch up with him on a day the championship slipped away in Adelaide.
As Chaz Mostert celebrated his maiden championship victory in Adelaide, a heartbroken Feeney went straight into his transporter to gather his emotions following a series of sucker punches on Sunday.
Feeney, who entered Sunday 23 points ahead of Mostert, was sent into a spin by Mostert’s teammate Ryan Wood on the opening lap. As he picked his way through the field, an engine issue denied him a chance a fight back.
Speaking on the broadcast post-race, an emotional Feeney — who claimed 14 wins and 19 pole positions this season — thanked his team amid the heartbreak.
"I want to thank everyone at Red Bull Ampol Racing,” a teary Feeney said on the broadcast.
"It's been a phenomenal year, something that I'll be very proud of for the rest of my life. But, yeah, that's the way it goes.
"It's the new system that they've got. You can have a shocker in the last race of the year and it all falls apart. I just wanna thank everyone on my crew. Congrats to Chaz. Obviously he had a great Finals Series.”
Feeney’s efforts were first delayed by a slow first pit stop, before the sick engine put paid to his hopes.
Red Bull Ampol Racing cleared a space in the garage with 30 laps to go, but Feeney soldiered on and finished 20th, one lap down — the first time he had dropped a lap all season.
“Sort of a shame how it was all going down there at the start and then, and then our issues came along,” the 23-year-old continued.
"No matter what happened today, the thing was going to break down, unfortunately.
"But, I can't thank my team enough, my family, friends, everyone that's got my back. Don't think you'll be hearing from me for a while mate, I'll be flying under the radar for a bit."
The 2026 Repco Supercars Championship will commence at the Sydney 500 on February 20-22. Tickets are on sale now.
