Broc Feeney delighted to take Finals shine off Chaz Mostert
Feeney won Sandown finale from pole position as Mostert spun off
Feeney, Mostert, Will Brown and Kai Allen to fight for title in Adelaide
Few returns of serve are better than victory, and that’s exactly what Broc Feeney put back on rival Chaz Mostert ahead of an Adelaide showdown.
Sunday’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500 action began in the wake of three consecutive wins for Mostert and Walkinshaw Andretti United.
On the other end of the coin was Feeney, who lost the championship lead and remained winless since Ipswich in August.
After a timely engine change, Feeney motored to pole position, and kept his head when others lost theirs to win Race 31 and snatch the points lead back.
On an afternoon headlined by a disastrous clash between Cam Waters and Matt Payne, along with a surprise mistake from Mostert, Feeney claimed his 13th win of the season to surge back into favouritism for the title.
Crucially, Feeney was delighted to take some shine off Mostert, having been winless in The Finals before Sunday.
"Starting at the front put us in a great position to go and win the race. It was an eventful race, rain, oil, we dropped back a bit at the start, the sun came out in the end,” Feeney said.
"It was in that second and third stint that we worked out way back forward, got back out in front by a bit and brought it home.
"To get a win at this time of the year is extremely important, good for momentum, good to take some of the buzz from Chaz and the others, good to go into Adelaide as a winner.
"So stoked to go into Adelaide as the championship leader, that's hugely critical. Looking forward to it, Adelaide's one of my favourites.”
Feeney versus Mostert was the key storyline heading into Sandown weekend. As fate would have it, they didn’t lock horns during the weekend, yet remained the key players by the end of it.
They will be joined in Adelaide by reigning champion Will Brown and rookie Kai Allen, who benefited from the Waters/Payne melee to clinch their Grand Final spots.
For Feeney, winning momentum is everything.
"It's a very short turnaround so we've got a lot of work to do in the meantime,” Feeney continued.
"We weren't the fastest car in either race this weekend. We were very competitive, but we need to be stronger come Adelaide.
"So stoked that the team has done such a great job to get both cars in the Grand Final, that's awesome for all of us. For us now it's time to knuckle down and go win a championship."
