Cameron Hill reacts to heartbreaking failure in Townsville
Matt Stone Racing driver fell out of the championship top 10
Debris caused brake failure in Sunday’s Townsville finale
A honeymoon to Europe is coming at the best time for Cameron Hill, who was left “really gutted” after a shocking stroke of bad luck.
The Matt Stone Racing driver fell out of the championship top 10 after a shock brake failure during Sunday’s Townsville finale.
Hill was running in the top 10 when debris — namely, a bolt — caused a one-in-a-million “explosion” in the front left brake.
The incident dropped Hill to 24th and last in the race, and out of the top 10. In his place is now Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Ryan Wood.
Speaking on Supercars’ Cool Down Lap podcast, the Canberran saw through the heartbreak with a smile, and was keen to switch off before returning for Ipswich.
“We need all those bolts holding our cars together, because it made a proper mess,” said Hill, who left for Europe on Monday with wife Emily.
“Really, really gutted, because we were on for a top 10 and we need top 10s at this point in the game.
“I’m going to Europe tomorrow. It's my honeymoon. So, I'm not gonna think about race cars for three weeks."
Hill had had a provisional Finals spot since Melbourne in March, when he claimed his first Supercars victory.
He backed it up with a podium in New Zealand, but bad luck first reared its head in Perth when he car failed to fire on the grid for Race 16.
Supercars returns to Queensland Raceway on August 8-10 to round out the Repco Sprint Cup at the Century Batteries Ipswich Super 440. Tickets are on sale now.
