Six-time and defending champion Jamie Whincup was right behind, but couldn't stop the Prodrive Falcons from another front row lock-out in qualifying at Sydney Motorsport Park.
The first qualifying session on the hard Dunlop tyre was dominated by the Pepsi Max duo with Chaz Mostert earning his ninth ARMOR ALL Pole Position of the year with a 1min30.08 lap.
"It's a big congrats to guys at Prodrive to give us a quick car over one lap - now we need to get off that start," Mostert said.
"We changed some things in the car so looking forward to some clear track."
Holden Racing Team struck more drama with Garth Tander stranded in the pit lane after a reported crank angle sensor failure in his #2 Commodore. He will start 25th but it's predicted he will make it out for the second qualifying session.
Shane van Gisbergen set the pace early but backed into Rick Kelly in the pit lane, in a traffic jam. He ended the session 21st.
David Reynolds will start alongside Whincup in fourth, with Craig Lowndes - the man chasing Winterbottom in the Championship - fifth.
