Morris eyeing Townsville turnaround after horror run

Nash Morris is hoping for a change of luck in Townsville following a challenging start to his rookie Dunlop Super2 Series campaign.

Morris graduated to the development series after winning the Super3 title last year but is yet to finish a race in 2022.

He recorded his fourth straight DNF in the Perth finale after his car was sent spectacularly skywards off the start.

It comes after he was spun late in the Sydney Motorsport Park opener and was an injured party the following day when Ryal Harris was bumped by Matt McLean in Race 2.

Saturday’s opener at Wanneroo Raceway saw Morris land in the Turn 6 gravel trap after an altercation with Brad Vaughan.

Heading into his third round aboard the upgraded Ford Falcon FG X, the Queenslander arrives at a happy hunting ground.

The 18-year-old dominated both Super3 rounds in Townsville last year, en route to claiming his maiden Super3 crown.

Morris was the biggest mover at the Reid Park Street Circuit in 2021, jumping four spots in the championship thanks to two podiums and dual wins including his first pole award.

“It was pretty good there last year,” Morris told Supercars.com.

“I'm definitely excited to get there, and really my goal is just to finish a race this year, we've had some pretty horrible luck.

“I just want to get a good result for our sponsors, because they've been sticking by me and my team as well.

“I really love the Townsville track; it's got a mix of everything.

“It’s fast-flowing, but also has the stop-start of a street circuit track.

“It's also one of the tracks where it's kind of got some runoff next to the wall, so it's not like the Gold Coast where there are walls all around you.

“There's a little bit of off here and there, so you can afford to push it, I'm excited to get there.”

Morris has also contested the Trans AM and TA2 categories between Super3 events in 2022.

He recorded a three top ten results at the Trans AM round at Mount Panorama in April.

The Flash Bush Motorsport driver took to his Super3 Falcon to Queensland Raceway late last month, supported Anton De Pasquale and father Paul.

“Anton has been very helpful to me this year,” Morris said.

“He's basically repaying what my dad did for him.

“Anton is one of my best mates and he's probably the one that really got me into racing.

“It's been great to have him along alongside and giving me hand along the way.

“It's pretty good to have the help from one of the best dudes in the game at the moment.

“He has given me a few tips for Townsville, and given me a few pointers, which I don't want to reveal to everyone else!

“But it's been very helpful to me, and so I was so it's guys like Brodie Kostecki and Broc Feeney who have all come through Norwell Motorplex.”

Grove Racing’s Matthew Payne currently leads the series, with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Declan Fraser 84 points behind.

The Dunlop Series will race on Saturday afternoon, ahead of the opening Supercars 250-kilometre race.
