In-form Kostecki's championship outlook

22 Aug 2023
Erebus star has won four of last five races

Brodie Kostecki says he his thinking about the championship fight “all the time”, but says it will look after itself with continued strong results.

The Erebus Motorsport driver made a big title statement at the OTR SuperSprint, winning all three races and extending his series lead to 137 points.

Kostecki has led the points for 15 of 22 races this season, and has more wins (six), podiums (15) and poles (six) than any other driver.

Prior to The Bend weekend, the Perth-born driver’s biggest margin atop the standings was 109 points during Darwin.

However, Kostecki knows better than anyone how quickly it can change — two races later, he was second behind teammate Will Brown after failures in the Darwin finale and Townsville opener.

Brown himself led the points heading to Sydney, but five races later, is 258 points behind his teammate.

Heading to the first enduro of the year, the Penrite Oil Sandown 500, Shane van Gisbergen is now second, albeit 137 points down with 1200 still to win across the final four rounds.

When asked about the ongoing title fight, Kostecki said: “You’re sort of thinking about it all the time.

“I sort of just jump in the car and do my job. If you have good results, the championship looks after itself.

“I’m pretty excited to go into the enduros and share the car with David Russell, he’s done a fantastic job for our team the last two years."

The Sandown and Bathurst events make up over 16 per cent of the season’s total points, yet are just two of the season’s 28 races.

A slip up, and the title picture changes once again — and Kostecki knows he and Russell have to keep their noses clean if the #99 driver is to lift the championship trophy at season’s end.

On the enduros, Kostecki said: “I hope so, yeah. I have no doubts we’ll be strong.

“We’ve been strong all year. We just have to minimise mistakes, execute on the weekends and we’ll be up the front.”

The 2023 season of endurance commences at the Penrite Oil Sandown 500 on September 15-17, before the Repco Bathurst 1000 on October 5-8.
