Historic team's historic carbon neutral stance
The Shell V-Power Racing Team has become Australian motorsport’s first carbon neutral team.
The championship-winning Ford squad has been awarded the highest three-star FIA environmental accreditation.
The team finalised and put in place its Environmental Policy in July 2021, with an enhanced effort to reduce waste, increase recycling, consolidate transport and logistics and shift to 100 per cent renewable energy to reduce its GHG footprint.
For each team member, the Shell squad is planting the number of trees needed to completely offset its annual per capita average greenhouse gas emissions.
In total, over 17,000 trees have been planted; 5100 in Australia with Trees For Life, and to date 12,220 trees planted in Nepal, India, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar with Tree-Nation.
The team will plant 1700 trees per annum in an ongoing commitment to Trees for Life.
Dick Johnson Racing Chairman and CEO Ryan Story first volunteered with Trees For Life when he was six years old.
Supercars Hall of Famer Johnson paid tribute to Story and the team’s partners in bringing the historic initiative to life.
"We’ve tried to give back something by pushing the boundaries in motorsport to keep it going as a great Aussie tradition,” said Johnson, who won three Bathurst 1000s and five drivers’ titles.
"We couldn’t have gone carbon neutral without our amazing partners and supporters. And my business partner Ryan has done an incredible job getting us to carbon neutral.
"Everything else we do we are proud of; the charities, supporting a great team, but for a motor racing team to go carbon neutral, well, that’s special even for an old bugger like me.
"I learned a thing or two about the business as all the information was compiled and what was clear to me is how much low hanging fruit there is to start to make an immediate difference.
"I can’t thank our partners and supporters enough that we are still here over 40 years on and still the benchmark in a lot of ways.
"Ryan has done an amazing job. This has been his baby for quite a while, this and everything he does for charity and for the team."
The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship and Dunlop Series seasons will conclude at the Repco Bathurst 1000.
Every session of the event will be broadcast live on Foxtel (Fox Sports 503) and streamed on Kayo.
