Rare error from two-time Bathurst winner costs Mostert dearly
  • Chaz Mostert to start 10th for Race 3 after spinning in Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout

  • #25 Mustang was set to feature at the pointy end after setting two purple sectors

  • Mostert has finishes of second and fourth this weekend

Chaz Mostert has been left to rue an uncharacteristic error during the Boost Mobile Top Ten Shootout for Race 3 at the Thrifty Sydney 500 - Opening Round.

Mostert was on course to vault to the top of the pylon as the sixth driver to venture out on track, with Will Brown's marker as the first driver out still the yardstick at that stage at a 1:29.9979s.

After setting two purple sectors in the opening two thirds of the lap, Mostert lost the rear of the #25 Mustang at Turn 9, before it flicked the other way and spun off into the grass on the outside of Turn 10.

Consigned to starting from the back of the top 10, Mostert was disappointed by the mistake, but is determined to atone for it in the 52 lap race this afternoon.

"First of all, I obviously let the team down today so I'm a little bit gutted about that," said Mostert.

"The lap time was looking to be pretty competitive, that time in the top 10. I had a real red-hot crack in the last sector but I just lost the rear really, really early, chased it all the way, and then every gear change it just kept getting worse and worse.

"I ended up getting a tank slapper by the time I got to Turn 10, and even then I was still chasing it, still chasing it, until it got to the point where I ran out of steering and that's all she wrote."

Mostert heads into the race 42 points from the championship lead, and believed he was on course to start from the first two rows.

"I've kind of got to laugh it off, mistakes happen, and when you're pushing the absolute limits. I'm gutted for the team because I think we had a pretty good starting position there in the front couple of rows," he added.

"The car feels a bit better, so I'll take the positives and try and make up for my mistake this afternoon."

Cam Waters claimed his third Boost Mobile Pole Award in three attempts for the weekend, whilst Mostert's Walkinshaw Andretti United teammate Ryan Wood is set to start in 12th.

Race 3 of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship will begin at 4:05pm local time.
