Van Gisbergen edges Davison, Reynolds in qualifying

Champion-elect Shane van Gisbergen has pipped Will Davison and David Reynolds to provisional Race 32 pole.

Van Gisbergen will be last man out in Sunday’s ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing driver won Saturday’s Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 opener.

The top three drivers were covered by just 0.02s; it comes after the top four on Saturday were covered by 0.09s.

The 20-minute session ran without major incident, although Tim Slade had a minor crash on his own midway through.

Slade clipped the inside wall at Turn 11 and suffered front left suspension damage.

The Gold Coast local managed to return the car to the lane, but it was too damaged to be repaired in time for the final minutes,

Slade will start Sunday's 250km finale from 25th and last.

Davison was the early pace-setter with a 1:10.771s ahead of teammate Anton De Pasquale.

Van Gisbergen, as he did on Saturday, opted to remain in pit lane in the opening minutes.

Will Brown (1:10.757s), Scott Pye (1:10.692s) and Brodie Kostecki (1:10.633s) each spent time at the top of the time sheets.

Just as Slade had his incident, van Gisbergen fired in a 1:10.485s to hold sway.

Cam Waters dropped in consecutive fast laps to slot into second, with the times continually improving down the grid.

Davison fired in a 1:10.283s and loomed to secure provisional pole, before van Gisbergen went even faster.

The margin was just 0.019s, with van Gisbergen taking provisional pole for the second time in as many days.

Reynolds was third, just 0.01s behind Davison, with Waters fourth ahead of Chaz Mostert.

Mostert was ninth and on the bubble prior to the final runs, and will be sixth man out in the Shootout.

Pye, who finished 17th in Saturday's, sealed passage into the Shootout ahead of Thomas Randle and De Pasquale.

Brodie Kostecki improved his own time to a 1:10.604s, which was good enough for ninth ahead of James Golding.

Golding secured PremiAir Racing's first Shootout berth at the death, some minutes after he encountered Davison at Turn 12.

Davison and Golding got too close for comfort prior to the latter's flying lap.

However, Golding wrangled the #31 Subway Commodore to the final Shootout berth at the expense of Broc Feeney by 0.03s.

The Shootout will commence at 11:35am local time.

The 85-lap Race 32 will start at 2:15pm.
