Commodores may have had the running so far in 2021, but the next venue has proven an Achilles heel of sorts.

Sydney Motorsport Park, which will host four straight rounds from this weekend, hasn’t been a happy qualifying hunting ground for Holden.

Dating back to 2014, Holden has claimed just one ARMOR ALL Pole Position in 16 attempts at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Conversely, Fords have claimed 12 of the last 16, with Scott McLaughlin helping Volvo to three SMSP poles.

Ford 12, Holden one. It’s by far the biggest disparity between the two manufacturers of circuits on the 2021 calendar.

Including 2021 results, of the last 16 poles, Holden leads the head-to-heads at Sandown (11-5) and Sandown (10-6).

Supercars are back in Sydney

Ford leads at The Bend (10-3), Darwin (10-4, Nissan 2) and Townsville (11-10).

Including this year’s Repco Mt Panorama 500, Ford and Holden are split at eight poles apiece in Bathurst.

Holden drivers have saved face when the lights go out, however.

Commodores have won eight of the last 16 races in Sydney. Ford drivers won seven, with McLaughlin winning aboard his Volvo on the Sunday in 2014.

Garth Tander (R) readies to launch from pole in 2008

In fact, in the last 16 races at SMSP, just five times has the winner come from pole.

Aboard his #17 Shell V-Power Racing Team Mustang, McLaughlin won three times from pole across the two SMSP events in 2020.

You have to go way back to March 2008 - over 13 years ago - to when a Holden driver last won a race from pole position in Sydney.

Garth Tander won Race 1 of the 2008 weekend from pole, and went on to finish third overall behind first-time winner Will Davison.

Current series leader Shane van Gisbergen has won four races at SMSP, but has never taken a pole position.

Scott McLaughlin was the SMSP pole king

Of circuits on the 2021 calendar, van Gisbergen has only failed to claim pole at SMSP and The Bend Motorsport Park.

A total of 13 drivers have taken pole at the circuit, with McLaughlin the overwhelming leader with an SMSP record 10 poles.

The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship will continue at this weekend’s Bunnings Trade Sydney SuperNight. Tickets for all four upcoming Sydney events are on sale now.

All sessions will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and streamed via Kayo.

The Seven Network will broadcast live from 3:30pm AEDT on Saturday and 12:30pm AEDT on Sunday.
