A bruising NTI Townsville 500 weekend has seen Chaz Mostert drop behind Will Davison in the championship points battle.

Mostert held third in the standings from Sandown in March, but finishes of 14th and ninth in Townsville all but ended his 2021 title bid.

With Shane van Gisbergen winning both races, Mostert haemorrhaged 153 points to the series leader in the one weekend.

Davison finished fourth on Sunday to jump Mostert, and heads to this weekend’s WD-40 Townsville SuperSprint 13 points ahead.

Ninth on Sunday was still a marked improvement on Saturday for Mostert.

He could only qualify 17th and battled with balance en route to 14th.

“We definitely made some improvements today, the car was a lot better in the race, so that’s promising,” he said.

"We’ve still got some work to do this week before next weekend, but I have nothing but faith in the people here."

Mostert and teammate Bryce Fullwood lined up 12th and 13th for Sunday’s race, with Mostert running long.

He held a top 10 position with 20 laps remaining, and held onto ninth.

“We will take what we learned today, and use it through the week before next Saturday,” he continued.

"I’m excited at the opportunity to have another go next weekend that’s for sure."
