Pepsi Max Crew star Chaz Mostert has taken out bragging rights by becoming the first V8 Supercars winner on the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

The reigning Bathurst champion finished ahead ofVolvo rival Scott McLaughlin and Erebus' Will Davison in the first of three street challenges on the new circuit in the Malaysian capital.

Mostert started from third on the grid and the lead changed a number of times as the drivers weaved their way around the track at the KL City Grand Prix in hot and humid conditions.

But Mostert, who has beenon a roll in V8 Supercars lately, prevailed to take the chequered flag.

The time certain race saw the drivers complete 12 laps, with McLaughlin setting the quickest lap of the challenge with a 1min26.385 on the final lap, as he tried to make inroads on Mostert's 0.6sec lead.

Davison finished ahead of pole sitter Todd Kelly, and veteran Craig Lowndes, who appeared to have a tyre issue on the final lap and dropped back through the field and trundled home to finish well behind the pace setters.

Speaking after the race, Mostert said:"To get that first win I'm happy and looking forward to tomorrow. It's pretty hot around the track!"

Davison was happy to finish with the car intact after negotiating the tight and fast street circuit.

"What a great place -it's pretty crazy and pretty narrow in some spots," he said."It's easy to make a mistake and do some damage, but we're happy for a straight car."

Mostert will be awarded maximum points today, with the event winner determined after two more sprints tomorrow.
