Woodstock Highlights Qualifying Race 6 - WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint

Scott McLaughlin has continued his blistering speed at the WD-40 Phillip Island SuperSprint, clinching ARMOR ALL Pole Position for this afternoon’s 120km race.

The Volvo driver recorded his 1min30.4880sec lap with 32 seconds remaining in the 15-minute session, knocking fellow young gun Chaz Mostert to P2 by just 0.0171sec.

McLaughlin has shown good form at the Victorian circuit in past years, on the podium after each race last year and winning in 2014.

He enjoyed the lap, though it wasn’t quite as fast as his record-smashing run yesterday in practice.

“It was so much fun … I knew it would be close,” he said at the end of the session.

“It has been a tough start, it was a tough year last year and hopefully we’ll bounce back this year.”

Mostert is pleased with the pace in his Supercheap Auto Falcon, though he was unsure where he’d roll out in qualifying with the field running pre-marked tyres yesterday.

His teammate and current champ Mark Winterbottom was right behind, set to face off with old foe Jamie Whincup on the second row, with Shane van Gisbergen completing the top five.

Championship leader Will Davison has a tough race ahead of him, lining up in P20 after experiencing “quite aggressive oversteer” in his Darrell Lea STIX Commodore.
