Footy legend impressed by under the radar Mostert

Rugby league legend Darryl Brohman has recounted a recent mid-air chance meeting with Supercars series leader Chaz Mostert.

Brohman, famously nicknamed ‘The Big Marn’, was recognised by a stranger on a recent flight.

That stranger turned out to be Walkinshaw Andretti United Ford star Mostert, who is also an NRL fan.

Speaking on his radio programme, Brohman revealed how he met Mostert, who downplayed his star status to the popular footy personality.

“I didn’t know who it was, I was in Row 4 and I was on the window seat, and I was one of the last 20 to get onto the plane,” Brohman said.

“There were two people sitting in [Row] 1 and 2 for example and I just said, 'I’m in the corner there’… and being a big bloke, I said,' I can’t sneak through, do you mind?'

“Anyway, they got up, there was a lady and a bloke.

“So I sat down and I said to the bloke, ‘Listen, I’m going to need the extension lead here I think to buckle myself up’.

“He said, ‘You won’t need it, you’ll be right'. He [Mostert] said, 'I don’t want to be too bold, but I did watch The Footy Show and I really enjoyed the stuff you did with the kids’.

“I said, ‘Thanks mate — oh, what do you do?'

“He said, ‘I drive cars’.

“I said, ‘What … are you a chauffeur?'

“He said, ‘No, I drive racing cars’.

“I said, ‘Oh you drive racing cars’... then I said, 'Are you a legend?’

“And he said, ‘Nah nah nah, I’m not a legend, nah I’m not’.

“I said, ‘What’s your first name'… and he said, ‘Chaz'.

“I said, ‘What, Chaz Mostert?' And he said, ‘Yeah that’s me’."

Laughing, former NSW Blues captain Paul Gallen said, "He’s won Bathurst twice.”

Brohman played for the likes of Penrith and Canterbury in the 1970s and 1980s, and also represented Queensland in State of Origin.

He later rose to fame as a member of The Footy Show, where he met Jamie Whincup during filming for a segment in 2013.

Such is Mostert’s love for footy, that Brohman detailed how the Ford star also watched a live NRL game on his phone during the flight.

“Can I tell you he is the most lovely kid, he’s 30 years of age, he was really well spoken,” Brohman added.

“He was actually watching the game on his phone, watching the Dolphins, he’s a Brisbane boy.”

Mostert is a fan of the Brisbane Broncos and has plenty of experience with NRL players in Supercars.

Close friend and Fox Sports commentator Corey Parker has taken a ride with Mostert on several occasions, while in 2018, Mostert took Newcastle Knights ace Kaylyn Ponga for a memorable lap of the Newcastle Street Circuit — which has since been viewed close to one million times online.
