Cam Waters "didn't want to give it to" Broc Feeney "too easy"
Waters made dominant Feeney work for race lead after Safety Car
Feeney raced away to 12th win of 2025, Waters finished lucky second
Starting 19th, Cam Waters looked set for a 300th Supercars race to forget.
Then, a Safety Car changed everything.
The Tickford Racing driver followed home the rampant Broc Feeney in Sunday’s action-packed Ipswich finale, with Kai Allen third.
Waters, Allen and Andre Heimgartner all started towards the back, but after running long, a well-timed Safety Car brought them right into play.
With the Safety Car period ongoing and the field stuck at 80km/h, the trio stopped twice under yellow and jumped Feeney.
The #88 Red Bull Ampol Chevrolet was the class of the field, and after clearing Allen and Heimgartner, Feeney set off after Waters.
On lap 43 of 63, Feeney launched his attack. Just as they did in Sydney, Waters and Feeney made each other work for it, and the latter came out on top.
While he acknowledged Feeney was simply too good, Waters was pleased to finally have some luck go his way after a series of outs in recent rounds, most recently a shocking qualifying run on Sunday.
“My day was pretty bad. Obviously with qualifying, quite poor just this weekend, really struggling,” he said.
“Once we got in the race, it wasn't too bad. Just dirty air really hurt us. So, decided to do something a little bit different and go super long and hope for a bit of luck to go our way.
"And when I saw [Cameron Crick] beached in the sand, I was pretty excited. Obviously a lot of luck in today's result, but we're gonna take it.”
In clean air at the front, Waters was able to cling onto a margin before Feeney’s advantage brought the #88 right up to the #300.
Unlike others, Waters wanted to make Feeney sweat for the win. He did just that, returning serve after a move at Turn 3, before Feeney muscled back past through Turns 4 and 5.
"It's a different race. Your car's a lot better with the clean air. So, in the first stint, even when I got a bit of clean air, my car was a lot better,” Waters said.
"I knew if I had some clean air once we got going and whatnot, I knew I was probably gonna be okay.
“Broc was way too quick for us, but I didn't want to give it to him too easy. But once he cleared out, my car was okay and just wanted to try and hold onto P2."
