Van Gisbergen was beaten to the Phillip Island pole by BP Ultimate wildcard Fawzan El-Nabi but immediately took the lead.

El-Nabi meanwhile bogged down and lost 11 positions by the end of the opening lap.

The Kiwi would fight back by virtue of an early stop but would finish just 16th after being handed a drive-through penalty for contact with Scott McLaughlin.

Chaz Mostert took the effective race lead through the pitstop sequence after stopping earlier than his rivals.

Van Gisbergen though managed to sneak by the Walkinshaw Andretti United Holden at Honda, and De Pasquale would soon follow him through.

The lead duo would then battle it out to the end, with De Pasquale right on the tail of the Red Bull Holden throughout the final lap.

Van Gisbergen would hold on by just 0.629 seconds to extend his championship lead, with title rival McLaughlin coming home in ninth.

Mostert hung on for third ahead of Tickford duo Lee Holdsworth and Cameron Waters.

Will Davison, Jack Le Brocq, Todd Hazelwood, McLaughlin and Dunlop Super2 Series wildcard Tyler Everingham rounded out the top 10.
