For more than 30 years, the Air Force Balloon has inspired an interest in aviation among young people.
The balloon team travels across the country to schools and communities, and conducts regular training flights in Canberra and throughout regional Australia.
The team, which includes 3 pilots and 25 ground crew, operate four flying balloons with distinctive artwork featuring an F-35A Lighting II aircraft, an indigenous-themed stylised eagle and the RAAF crest on a light-blue background. The fourth balloon is shaped like an F-35 fighter pilot’s helmet.
The Air Force Balloon is operated by Central Flying School and is based at HMAS Harman in Canberra.
