Fast man Mostert's new place in Supercars history
Chaz Mostert will go down in Supercars history as the driver who scored the most fastest lap bonus points in 2021.
The 2021 Repco Supercars Championship was the first season to award bonus points to drivers who set the fastest lap of the race.
Five bonus points were on offer to the driver who set the fastest lap in each of the 24 races held at SuperSprint format rounds this year.
Points were only awarded to drivers provided they finished the race.
There were eight three-race SuperSprint rounds in 2021 - Sandown, Tasmania, Tailem Bend, Darwin, Townsville twice and Sydney thrice - with a total of 120 bonus points on offer.
Walkinshaw Andretti United ace Mostert, who was third in Practice 1 on Friday in Sydney, recorded a total of 25 bonus points.
The 15-time race winner scored the first bonus points in Race 3 at Sandown, which he led until the closing laps.
He also scored bonus points twice in Tasmania (Races 7 and 8), once in Darwin (Race 13) and once at Sydney Motorsport Park (Race 24).
Mostert also set the fastest lap in Race 10 at the OTR SuperSprint, but because he failed to finish the race, he didn’t take home the five extra points.
Nine drivers, including Mostert, scored fastest lap bonus points in 2021.
Points leader Shane van Gisbergen claimed bonus points four times - Sandown (Race 5), Tailem Bend (Race 9), Darwin (Race 12) and Townsville (Race 18).
Mostert scored the very first bonus points at Sandown in March
Anton De Pasquale, Jamie Whincup and Cameron Waters did it three times and Will Brown twice.
Brodie Kostecki, Scott Pye and Tim Slade also claimed bonus points once each in Sydney.
