Ferrari 512s at the 1970 24 Hours of Daytona

After a crash program to develop a car that could compete with the new Porsche 917 Enzo Ferrari fielded five new (and untested) Ferrari 512 cars at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Porsche already had a six month lead in development and testing. Three of the cars were factory cars and two were privateer. The #27 car in the photo is a factory 512 driven by Jacky Ickx and Peter Schetty. Behind this car is a NART privateer 512 driven by Dan Gurney and Chuck Parsons. Behind them is a factory 512 driven by Nino Vaccarella and Ignazio Giunti. None of the cars in the photo would finish. One of the other factory 512s driven by Mario Andretti and Arturo Merzario would finish third behind two Gulf Porsche 917s. One month later a factory 512 driven by Mario Andretti would win at Sebring. This was the only points race a Ferrari 512 would ever win. Please note the roof bulge in the NART car. This was to accommodate Dan Gurney, who was taller than the average Italian driver.
