Race starts will come under the microscope at Walkinshaw Andretti United after a mixed start to the season, says Technical Director Carl Faux.

Chaz Mostert began the year quickest off the line in Bathurst, leading the field into Turn 1 in the second race from P2 on the grid.

Come last weekend’s Melbourne SuperSprint, and the tables turned on Mostert, who lost ground into Turn 1 in three of the four races.

Notably, Mostert dropped from third in sixth in the Saturday race, before losing his pole advantage to Matt Payne on Sunday, leading to their collision.

Mostert still demonstrated impressive race pace, but Faux admitted “we did not get the results we wanted” given their team’s spearhead secured just one podium in four starts.

“The racing was a bit frenzied with some crazy moves over the weekend, but it was entertaining for the fans,” Faux said.

“The starts eluded us this weekend and it was a shame Chaz Mostert was shunted in the second race. But it was great for Ryan Wood to get a top 10 to prove he can race with the top drivers.

“Ultimately we did not get the results we wanted, but the crew did a good job. We still need some work in a few key areas.

“Our chassis balance is really good and the car really looks after its tyres. The drivers aren’t really wanting anything and it can pull a lap time without hurting the tyres.

“We now need to get the starts right and work on some straight-line handling to see where we end up.”

Mostert remains third in the championship, 97 points behind Will Brown, heading to the next race in New Zealand.
