Waters third in Bathurst Shootout behind Kostecki and Feeney
Tickford star finished on Bathurst podium in last three attempts
Ford had six cars in Saturday Shootout, but Kostecki over 0.5s clear
Cam Waters has vowed to “rag the thing” in Sunday’s Repco Bathurst 1000 as he hunts his first Great Race win, and Tickford Racing’s first in nine years.
Waters and James Moffat will start Sunday’s race from third after the Mildura-born driver finished third in the ARMOR ALL Top Ten Shootout.
Championship leader Brodie Kostecki flexed his muscle with a time a staggering 0.4830s quicker than next best Broc Feeney.
When asked about his Sunday prospects, Ford star Waters said: “I can’t really answer that question, I am not really sure.
“It has been the story of the year, over a race distance we are nowhere.
“I still think we have race pace dramas so hopefully we will have a bit of luck tomorrow. James and I will rag the thing and hopefully something happens.”
Waters is on three straight Bathurst podiums, finishing second in 2020 and 2021, and third last year despite Moffat being sent into a spin by Kostecki.
Kostecki has proven quick over one lap and on race pace, and is now firm favourite to win his maiden Great Race with veteran David Russell.
Waters looms as one of Ford’s best hopes to score the Blue Oval’s first Bathurst win since 2019, and said he had nothing left to give in his Shootout effort.
Reflecting on his 2:04.7775 lap, Waters — a two-time Bathurst pole winner — said he gave it everything: “That was me tapped, there was nothing else in that.
“The conditions were really good and the track was pretty fast.
“The car made a fair bit of grip and over the top was probably where I made all my time over the top, but Brodie was fast there too.”
Supercars will return to the track for the Warm Up at 8:00am AEDT before the 161-lap Race 24 at 11:15am.
