Mostert and Holdsworth combine for four Sandown 500 podiums
Lee Holdsworth is excited to have two shots at 2023 glory with Chaz Mostert and Walkinshaw Andretti United, starting with this weekend’s Penrite Oil Sandown 500.
WAU has reunited Mostert and Holdsworth for this year’s enduros, the duo having combined to win the 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000.
Holdsworth retired from full-time racing at the end of 2022, and was quickly snapped up by WAU to again race with Holdsworth.
The Mostert/Holdsworth is one of two pairings on the grid with two Bathurst winners, along with Penrite Racing’s David Reynolds/Garth Tander pairing.
The #25 Mobil 1 Optus Mustang will be one to watch at Sandown given Mostert and Holdsworth’s form in the 500km classic.
In seven Sandown 500 starts, Mostert has three podiums — second in 2015 and 2019, third in 2017 — and a top five in 2015.
Holdsworth, meanwhile, raced to third in 2019 alongside Thomas Randle, who like Mostert, was a constant feature of the podium at the last start OTR SuperSprint.
Mostert, who is fifth in the championship after eight rounds, has claimed four podiums in his last seven starts.
For Holdsworth, who will have gone 287 days between races when Sunday’s 161-lapper gets underway, having two races in 2023 is a bonus given Mostert’s recent form.
“It’s awesome to be back with the WAU crew, and of course, Chaz,” Holdsworth said.
“We’ve got some good memories from a couple of years ago.
“It’s great that it’s now two rounds for me, a couple of years ago it was only one with Bathurst.
“I’m really pumped for the Sandown race — I love that track, and things are going pretty well.
“The WAU crew are doing a great job with their cars, they were pretty strong at Tailem Bend.”
Holdsworth will get his first competitive taste of the #25 WAU Ford on Friday at Sandown, with three 30-minute practice sessions to headline the day’s action.
