Monster crash for Golding at Sandown

The Wilson Security Sandown 500 has been suspended after a huge crash by young rookie James Golding on the opening lap.

The Volvo co-driver started the race from fourth on the grid and appeared to have a right front puncture. The Volvo slammed into the fence at approximately 145km/hour and the young racer walked away from the accident.

It appeared damage on Jack Perkins’ Holden Racing Team Commodore tapped the front of the Volvo.

Golding is back in the GRM garage and says he was "just trying to stay alive".

"I'm really lucky to still be here," Golding said on the coverage.

"It's really disappointing for the team...

"The front right tyre starting losing pressure on the back straight. As soon as I hit brakes it locked straight away. I was virtually a passenger from there … really disappointed, we’ll move on to Bathurst."

Golding was unsure of all the details of the incident. 

"It was really sudden it happened that quick you couldn’t really think before it happened. Had a bit of headspin but that stopped and I felt ok."

Rogers on the huge lap one crash

The race will resume once the barriers are repaired at turn seven.

The Supercars are lined up in pit lane and can be repaired under the red flag conditions.
