The Sargent Security Phillip Island 360 has the power to change everything.
Not only are the Championship leaders vulnerable with such small margins separating the top four – the track record is set to be smashed. Every aspect points to close, fast racing at the picturesque but unique seaside circuit.
It’s the final 60/60 Super Sprint – and while Jamie Whincup is the only driver to have won two of the split races, his awkward record at the Island works against him.
Lowndes however, has the most ARMOR ALL Pole Positions of any driver at the circuit (five) and the most wins of any current driver (eight, behind Mark Skaife on nine). He also has that all-important six-point buffer.
Ford Performance Racing’s Mark Winterbottom and Will Davison won both races at Phillip Island last year, so they are well in the game.
And if your favourite driver isn’t in the top four, that doesn’t mean they don’t have a huge opportunity to improve their standing for the season – it’s still close between sixth to ninth, with just 15 points separating Garth Tander in sixth to Shane van Gisbergen in seventh, 65 between SVG and Jason Bright, and 88 between Bright and James Courtney. Twenty-five points separate Scott McLaughlin in 10th and David Reynolds in 11th – so there will be battles throughout the field to see who can finish the season in the best possible position in the top 10.
So the real question is – how will you be following this weekend’s racing?!
Watch it LIVE
Phillip Island is less than a two-hour drive from Melbourne CBD – so what are you waiting for? If you’re a local, there’s no reason not to watch the action live.
For those who don’t want to leave, there is no need. Camping is available at the Visitors Centre Gardens, a short walk from the circuit. Spots are limited and soon to sell out, so get in quickly.
There are plenty of tickets still available and the beauty of the Phillip Island circuit is fans can drive their cars into the circuit, and park with circuit views for $10.
Paddock passes are available across the weekend – in fact, grandstand tickets holders receive a free pit lane walk and paddock access.
There are plenty of interactive activities such as autograph sessions, the Disney-Pixar Fun Zone and on-track displays including Freestyle MotoX, Matt Mingay and the Stuntz Inc team and the Matt Hall Aerial display.
Otherwise, the support categories will keep you entertained, with Australian Superbikes and Formula Ford on the bill, as well as the Touring Car Masters. This event is the finale for the classic category, with Jim Richards, John Bowe and Andrew Miedecke in the fight. Richards leads by 56, Bowe ahead of Miedecke by 67 – so with 180 on offer, the title is wide open.
Grandstand and trackside passes are still available to the event – book through Ticketek.
Children 12 and under receive free general admission passes.
