Alex Davison and Dean Canto will re-join the Toyota 86 Racing Series field for the upcoming Townsville 400, driving two specially-liveried cars.

The North Queensland Cowboys will back the two guest cars in the field as the series makes its debut at the Townsville street circuit.

Prodrive enduro co-driver Steve Owen will also be on hand throughout the weekend as the nominated mentor for the event.

Canto, Davison and Owen all took part in select rounds in last year's inaugural Toyota 86 season.

The Cowboys connection comes through Toyota's sponsorship of the 2015 NRL premiers.

Series newcomer and points leader Jimmy Vernon hopes to continue his run of form after winning two out of three races at Phillip Island.

"We're leading the series, but we're not getting ahead of ourselves," Vernon said.

"It's a very competitive series and everyone is pushing 100 per cent, so we'll strive to be in the top ten and if things go well in the top five.

"Obviously the Townsville circuit is new to everyone in an 86, but I have driven there in another category, so it will be exciting.

"You'll need to have your brain switched on because if you allow someone to slip up the inside of you, there will be a whole train of other drivers trying to follow them through."
