Johnson walks through journey in touching interview
Motor racing icon Dick Johnson has opened up about his journey to Quit Smoking, in a new campaign that aims to inspire Australian Smokers to Give Up for Good.
The racing legend won five championships and three Bathurst 1000s in a Supercars Hall of Fame career.
The son of a car salesman, Johnson began racing in the mid 1960s, and had established himself as one of Australia's premier racers by the early 1980s.
Johnson, now 81, spent a lifetime pushing through pressure, setbacks, and challenges on the track.
In a personal interview, Johnson shared the story behind his decision to quit smoking. From struggling to breathe behind the wheel, to wanting a healthier future.
After years of smoking and multiple attempts to quit, Johnson revealed the life-changing moment that finally made him give up for good – and why he’s never looked back.
“For me, it was seeing what my father went through,” Johnson reflects on the decision to quit.
“It’s not easy to give up smoking… but I’m still here, and I’m going to be around for a while yet.”
Johnson's message is simple: there’s help available, and quitting is possible. For more support to quit smoking visit health.gov.au/GiveUpForGood, download the new My QuitBuddy app, or call Quitline on 13 78 48.
