Supercars teams pack up in Taupō as cyclone approaches
Cars and equipment packed into containers bound for Christchurch
On-site event staff dismantling temporary infrastructure around venue
Supercars teams have quickly packed up in Taupō as Cyclone Vaianu approaches landfall in New Zealand.
Supercars made the “difficult but necessary decision” to cancel Sunday’s event day, prioritising the safety of fans, teams, officials, and all event personnel.
The decision was made following consultation with authorities and emergency services, including Motorsport New Zealand, Taupō Emergency Management, Taupō District Council and New Zealand Major Events.
Race 10 of the Repco Supercars Championship will be rescheduled to Friday at the ITM Christchurch Super 440.
Following Saturday’s second race, teams quickly packed their cars and equipment into their containers, which have replaced transporters for the New Zealand swing.
Team personnel worked into the night to complete the pack-down, with containers set to be ferried over the Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton, before arriving in Christchurch.
The work didn’t stop there, with on-site event staff also dismantling temporary infrastructure around the venue. Notably, support category marquees had been dismantled by the time Saturday’s second Supercars race was completed.
Following the state of local emergency for the Waikato region, including the Taupō District, fans are urged to follow the latest MetService warnings and the advice of local authorities.
Supercars also acknowledged the impact on ticket holders for Sunday. Ticketek NZ will contact affected ticket holders directly in the coming days with information on refund options.
